Reuben Kaye 5***** - One4Review
one4review | On 08, Aug 2017
On a busy Saturday night, I packed into Assembly Checkpoint in the hope of being entertained by Australian cabaret act Reuben Kaye, and was not disappointed. As soon as he took to the stage I was unable to take my eyes off him. Not only does he look amazing – gorgeously flamboyant outfit, glittering lipstick and enough false eye lashes to sink a ship – his stage presence is overpowering.
His cabaret show contains what you would expect – exceptionally funny, cutting one liners and above all, an amazing voice. Clearly a cultured man, his monologues were equal parts warm, scathing, moving and shocking. No one in the audience is safe from his acid tongue, but he adds in just enough self-deprecation to keep him likeable and engaging. His voice is incredible and his band, the “special K’s” are fantastic. Special mention to his Kate Bush and Iggy Azalea covers, which really showed off his vocal talent.
Throw in not one but two costume changes, two encores and a running time of 70 minutes, you certainly get your money’s worth. Kaye is a natural performer and you will not be disappointed. Cabaret at its camp, flamboyant but excellent best.
