Njambi McGrath: Accidental Coconut 3***

| On 08, Aug 2019

Njambi McGrath is making her Fringe debut this year and is an engaging comic originally from Kenya. Having the confidence to persuade her audience nearer the front and the explanation of how the show title came about she is off and running. She seemed really confident and was collecting many laughs along the way.
The biggest part of her hour is heavily factual material on the history of East Africa, a lot of the audience I shared the show with seemed unaware of most of the facts and if there was a down side of this then the performance was often more like a tutorial rather than an out and out comedy show  although there were laughs along the way.
But she spoke of her husband, the way they met together with personal history, takes on religion and of course there was the catch phrase. At first it was funny but, for me at least, a bit overused and lost some of its appeal in doing so.
The show was tight, almost too tight. It was well written and informative and delivered in a confident manner. I’m sure she could, but it would have been good to see a bit of ‘off book’ bits as well in proceedings.
