Ali Brice: I tried to be funny, but you weren't looking 3*** - One4Review

Ali Brice starts out strong and silly with some lovely clowning around a Venetian blind. The show is a heartfelt account of his experience of trying to take his life three years ago by overdose and his subsequent experiences of therapy. Although it’s a heavy subject he approaches it with an ease and empathy that is a testament to the efficacy of said therapy. He manages to vividly paint the picture of his depression ‘heavy with swallowed conversational bricks’ in a way that I’m sure many people will find relatable.
The show I saw was slightly derailed, in the most enjoyable way, by the excellent casting of two members of the audience as his mother and father, they were drawn into the story throughout for comment and to validate events. Which, although great might have lost the thread of some of the jokes.
It’s not the funniest hour, but it is a joy to watch. He’s a very comfortable performer, happy to take whatever the room brings. The show ends neatly with a call back to the name of the show and a genuine offer of a chat after, for anyone effected by the any of the subject matter.
The room was full and as an un-ticketed event it’s well worth getting there early to avoid disappointment. The venue has started giving placeholder tickets an hour before the start of the event so you can relax and have a drink rather than standing around for ages.
Trigger warning: Suicide
