Jo Griffin: People Person 3***

| On 14, Aug 2022

In this three star show with a five star ending, Ms Griffin demonstrates that as well as being a people pleaser, she’s also a crowd-pleaser. You could describe this show as a fifty-seven minute set-up for a three-minute punchline, and while this would be unfairly disregarding the fifty-seven minutes, it was definitely the bit Ms Griffin looked most pleased with (as well she should) and which the audience were most vocal about.

For the most part this is observational stand-up; episodes from Ms Griffin’s experiences packaged into amusing stories with additional funny commentary, on topics including mid-life crises, break-ups, and the fate of one’s ashes. Ms Griffin is a likable stage presence from the very start, with a conversational style that makes it feel like she’s chatting to some mates. She throws some questions to the audience, who were more than happy to engage in a chat.

The show itself is aiming for a structure it doesn’t quite achieve, but it’s equally not loose enough to fully embrace the truly rambling narrative style. There are two points – one at the start and one at the end – and there is some fun in the middle of them and a finale after. The show does aim to be an hour of good fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it certainly achieves that.
