Anna Akana : It Gets Darker 4.5****

| On 09, Aug 2024

As the title suggests the theme and topics covered are not easy to put across within a stand up comedy show. There are a number of shows at the Fringe this year that are presented under the comedy umbrella but cover some very serious issues. So how dark can you go and make it funny? How about a stalking nightmare where the stalker threatened to shoot you on stage, which was so traumatic that Anna developed PTSD, and kept her from performing for six years? Oh and the suicide of your thirteen year old sister? Both topics are covered with much ease and wit.

The content could present a lesser performer with quite an impossible task but Anna is an exceptionally talented story teller. She is slick. She is engaging and very funny.

L.A. based Anna is an accomplished stand up, author, screenwriter and very successful YouTuber who has built up an enormous following exploring such topics as mental illness, PTSD and suicide prevention.

This is Anna’s UK debut having worked extensively in stand up in the U.S., prior to her six year hiatus.

This is a hugely entertaining and thought provoking hour of comedy. Small in stature and hugely talented. The audience have been gripped throughout the light and the darkness of this superbly crafted show.
