How to catch a Book Witch – 3.5 Stars

| On 02, Aug 2024

How to Catch a Book Witch presents an endearing performance that uses music, puppetry, and other heartfelt storytelling techniques to underline one main theme: libraries are important. The story follows Kira and her new friend, Barry the bookworm on a journey to save their beloved library as it come under threat from both The Book Witch, an unknown magical being who is culling words from books and Mr. Grey who has set his sights on turning the library into a car park. A grey one, get it?

The show is fantastic for inclusivity, with keyword signing and subtitles throughout, meaning that all can enjoy this story. The live music elements and narration are wonderfully performed by Hannah Platts, who takes us through the narrative with rhythm and aplomb

We see a range of puppets and props, some are subtle in design, although larger puppetry may provide an opportunity to improve storytelling or simply produce more giggles from the audience. There were also some nice yet simplistic animations which helped give more visualto the narrative.

Although at times the plot is a little obscure, and the characters are rather hard to distinguish at times due to minimal costumes, there are instances where younger audiences might have trouble keeping up. At times you wind up wanting a bit more Book Witch and fewer characters that don’t seem to add much, a small gripe.

The show is rife with laughter, from its colourful songs (an earwormI’m yet to shake). Families will easily relate to the central theme of appreciating diversity in stories, learning about how books have worth, and encouraging us to believe that libraries hold something for everyone.

In the end, How to Catch a Book Witch is an adorable and charming piece of theatre, brimming with child-like creativity, although uneven in places it is a delightful experience.
