Sketch comedy is a dying art. Good sketch comedy is even harder to find. Pear (identical twins Patrick and Hugo McPherson) are setting new lofty heights in the genre.
So what are we dealing with here? Imagine The Fast Show and Attack Of The 50ft Woman giving birth to comedy twins they would produce these great sketch comedians.
The Fringe is difficult for any performer, but at 6ft 7in the twins have much more to deal with in this venue, so much so they have to perform without shoes to avoid physical damage.
After the initial introductions and gentle audience interactions (“6ft 2 mate? Nae, you can’t join our WhatsApp group”) and how triplets are the devil incarnate the sketches start.
And they are good, bizarre, and occasionally brilliant (The Africa sketch is a delight). I would compare them in structure to a comedy team Ramones – slick, short sketches that never outstay their welcome. While not everything a slam dunk don’t worry, a new one will be along in a minute.
Pear are going places and will outgrow these size venues soon. Grab a ticket while you can.
Oh, check out their Merch table on the way out, one of the best gags of the night.
