Kava Girls – 1*

| On 25, Aug 2014

This is a very poorly-written piece about three people looking for their big break in theatre, working as understudies. Most of the singing is very low for the women and there is quite a lot of pitchy singing in general, often with no need to actually break into song really. Musically it is very simple and either to backing track or basic two-note piano melodies.

The acting is terrible, over the top with poor characterisation and there is no empathy with the characters. It is quite possible that a lot has been lost in translation from its Samoan origins so perhaps someone could look over the work if it is to have another production. I did feel for them in such a tiny, tiny space but they didn’t have much to work with in the first place, this really needs a lot more depth and development.
