Paul Duncan McGarrity – Ask an Archaeologist 3***

| On 17, Aug 2016

Mr McGarrity is an archaeologist, and seems to be enamoured of it, especially the bit that means he gets to understand the stories – historical, psychological, superstitious. This show is about stories, including the ones we tell ourselves to help us make sense of the world.

Mr McGarrity is an immediately likeable, affable sort of person. I enjoyed the fact he sat on a seat for (almost) the whole set – it did indeed feel more like a conversation, and certainly less intimidating, than a comedy show normally does. It also makes more sense when the maximum audience in a room is about 22.

I also liked his distinction between entertaining an audience and making them laugh. I was certainly entertained by the show, I learned things and I had a nice time; but if you want laugh a-minute-stand-up, you need to go to another show.
The theme of the show is present enough to hold things together without presenting any inflexibility – there’s nice interaction with the audience within the theme. Paul’s delivery is confident and polished, despite his claim to be rather hungover. A good, informative, show.
