Holly Morgan: Madonna or Whore? 4**** - One4Review

Holly Morgan: Madonna or Whore? 4****

| On 18, Aug 2018

This was nuts and lovely and had a serious side too. Ms Morgan and her fiancé/partner-in-crime deconstruct the Madonna/whore theory (‘men categorise women as one or the other’…what happens when the women refuse to fit?) via the medium of Madonna (the pop star) songs, various ‘problematic’ historical women (starting with Lilith), and the interjections of various men. It also contributed to the #metoo discussion without being mawkish or bandwagon-esque. Holly used her own experience to further demonstrate her point.

Ms Morgan has a great voice and more than does justice to a variety of songs – both well known popular hits and lesser known album tracks. Particularly impressive was her impressions of other singers. Both Ms Morgan and her sidekick are practised performers, with no indication that they’re troubled by the fact that three audience members on stage drastically reduces the number still in seats, or that the show they’re performing is anything less than totally valid. This kind of commitment and confidence infects an audience, is vital to a show’s success, and they have it in spades.

The central thesis might be a little battered and obscured in service to the entertainment value of the show, but not so much as it ends up garbled. The ending is good fun, and ties up the show nicely.
