Romeo & Juliet: One-Man Musical 2** - One4Review

Romeo & Juliet: One-Man Musical 2**

| On 13, Aug 2019

This musical has been written using the original lines from every scene of Shakespeares’s classic, Romeo and Juliet.  As part of the ticket price, you get a colourful designed programme with the words from each Act and Scene included in it. However, unfortunately due to the lighting in the theatre, it wasn’t possible to read it during his performance.

Dressed in tracksuit and trainers with guitar in hand you almost think you have turned up to see a busker who has just walked off the street. Unfortunately, the entire show feels like this throughout his performance. On a positive note, you have to admire the guy who actually delivered a faultless rendition of the lines whilst playing his guitar. However, the music sounded pretty much the same throughout, with the occasional frantic strumming for the odd effect.

I recognise that a lot of time and effort has gone into this show but unfortunately, the concept just doesn’t work. The softly sung ballads along with the folky music just does not capture the drama and passion of Romeo and Juliet. It may work at the local folk festival but it certainly doesn’t work in a theatre.
