Darkfield’s latest show in a metal shipping container at Summerhall is described as a surreal journey through a dreamlike, labyrinthine hotel that exists entirely in your mind. You certainly know what you are letting yourself in for when you are given a safety briefing before entering the container and taking your allotted place in one of the metal caged seats along either side. You have an identity and the headphones you are given also include a microphone so you can provide your responses to a series of questions. The action takes place in total darkness, which is demonstrated briefly before you are given a final opportunity to leave if you find the whole thing a bit too daunting (two people did leave the show at this point, clearly realising that it wasn’t for them). You are at least told that you will be given a safeword which you can say at any time if you feel uncomfortable and you will be rescued. Once the show starts, the binaural stereo sound in the headphones is amazing which, combined with the total darkness, really does make you feel you are being guided down by your companion through several levels of the hotel, complete with the vibrations of the lift and a waft of air when the doors open and close. It was a weird, fully immersive experience and an enjoyable 30 minute journey, but with a few surprises, sharp noises and completely disconcerting. It’s not for the faint hearted!
