A Bee Story – 5*****

| On 17, Aug 2023

Back in the buzzing world of A Bee Story, the audience was treated to the grandiosity of the queen bee’s entrance, carried gracefully by the dedicated worker bee. The stage was set with honey as the first need of the hour. Telling a whimsically engaging tale, this performance is a silent symphony of well-executed choreography, acrobatics and flute playing. As the worker bee rolls, dives, and backflips in his endeavours to reach the elusive flower, we’re treated to an athletic ballet of sorts. Yet, his attempt to use a unicycle as a tool to get the high nectar, while ambitious, only draws a sea of giggles from the audience. Throughout there are gravity-defying stunts that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

As the worker bee does all he can through a showcase of acrobatics, balance and very impressive juggling, the queen doesn’t just watch as she gets heavily involved with the journey and her rendition of ‘Juice’ by Lizzo on the flute while being spun around the stage and through the air is wildly impressive.

Suddenly adversity strikes. Smoke enters the stage, followed by the sounds of roaring fires, a sad reminder of nature’s unpredictability. A heart-tugging transition, showcases the queen, once regal, now bereft of her crown. The worker bee never falters in his loyalty and admiration for his queen. Their playful meanderings among the audience, from dodging nets to humorously engaging with props like snakes and umbrellas, are pure delight.

The narrative soon makes it evident that teamwork makes the dream work. The duo’s collective juggling antics, especially the intricate baton exchanges, are delightfully captivating. As they mount unicycles of different sizes or juggle knives, the audience is hooked. The pressing question of getting that nectar soon leads to a heart-warming realisation by the queen about the importance of collaboration for the hive’s future.

I saw A Bee Story in 2022 and can confirm this is better than before (and that show was brilliant). This visual treat, paired with underlying environmental messages, crafts a compelling narrative that had young and old entranced. A captivating show for all ages. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
