Chat!  The Internet Musical - One4Review

Following on from last years success Jet Set Go! I was really looking forward to seeing their offering for Fringe 2009. Set in the cyber world of an Internet chat room five characters, schoolboy Darren, struggling to ‘come out’, Michelle a young single mother, Susan and Bob, a married couple who chat independently,  actor Brad somewhat self-obsessed and site administrator Mary react and interact both as a group and as individuals while sat at keyboards. The cast Diana Chrisman, Adam Barlow, Philippa Buxton, Leon Kay Adam Pritchard and Sophia Behn are all more than competent performers and they all sing well, the constraints of the space and need to spend time ‘behind keyboards’ did not really detract from the production, however I didn’t find this production very stimulating. The music although well performed, to me at least, was not very memorable. I feel there is plenty of scope for development with this show, but whereas last year’s production I felt was complete, I feel that this didn’t have the same air of being as ready to go further. I did enjoy it as it stands, just not as much as I hoped, but the enthusiastic audiences it is receiving on a regular basis maybe tell a slightly different story.   ****
