Jazz A Capella - The Oxford Gargoyles - One4Review

This group of 12 students from Oxford University have put together a beautifully crafted show. There is a blend of jazz standards such as ‘It’s all right with me’, a touch of the Blues and a very funny comedy calypso. Collectively, their sound is very tight and the harmonies pure. They are all individually talented singers and, when taking the lead, can hit those difficult notes with confidence and certainty. The jazz numbers naturally predominate and for most of these items the voices combine to give the sound of the horn and rhythm sections. They also do a few numbers as straight choir versions, ‘When I fall in Love’, for example. The up tempo numbers are slickly choreographed with touches of good natured humour. It is amazing to realise that the Oxford Gargoyles are students when their show has the look and presentation of a professional group.   ****
