Gillian Cosgriff – This is why we can’t have Nice Things 4****

| On 24, Aug 2016

It is always great to see a performance that is a surprise treat. I hadn’t intended to see Ms Cosgriff but when something dropped out of my schedule I took a punt. I certainly don’t regret the decision.
Playing the sweat box the Gilded Balloon Turret can be this cool as a cucumber Australian comic with an amazing singing voice royally entertained her audience with an eclectic mixture of comedy song all linked with some nicely observed comedy.
Gill is twenty something and a died in the wool procrastinator, to do lists don’t help her one bit, Facebook addicted and is a self-diagnosed sufferer of early on-set nostalgia. She is always poking fun at herself and her failings. The ex-boyfriend segment is slightly darker, but as with the rest of the set the humour and punchlines are well executed.
In the musical sections she accompanies herself on keyboards and a cheap ukulele, yet her voice soulful and jazz powerful, the comedy flows free with witty yet pithy lyrics, touches of Victoria Wood, even maybe Tim Minchin, drawing laughs in abundance. And of course there is the bag!
Fringe time is about taking a punt on a lesser known act and Gill is one who should be playing to packed out houses. Her future looks bright and assured.
