Athena Kugblenu: Follow the Leader 2** - One4Review

I really wanted to enjoy this show, but it felt like an hour of material that would have been more at home in a comedy club of the less salubrious variety, where the patrons are a little inebriated and not looking for comedy they have to work for. The pace and style of funny didn’t particularly vary, and the applause at the end felt a little underwhelmed and unenthused. But as Ms Kugblenu said, Fringe audiences are notoriously strange; she can be hilarious on Monday, and awful on Tuesday…
Hard to pinpoint what else was wrong about the show apart from the strength of the material. Ms Kugblenu is a sufficiently competent performer, with perhaps not enough variation in her vocal ticks or any energy on a wet Sunday. The audience didn’t seem to be with her, but she also seemed to lack any tactics or techniques for shaking things up and making us decide one way or another (hilarious or awful), apart from barrelling through the show and getting it done.
An acceptable performance which didn’t produce any strong feelings.
