Joey Page: Afterlife (An Idiot Considers a Series of Distractions Before Death) 3***

| On 23, Aug 2019

I have seen Joey Page a few times over the years, either being a compere or doing a slot on a compilation show, yet this was the first time I ventured to see a whole hour.
On entering into the Wyndy Room the performing area is littered with props and moody lighting and then we are off into the set, getting an insight into the strange, often surreal mind of Mr Page.
Using a mixture of straight stand –up and forays into his surreal sketches, seemingly without much if any linking gave the impression that like the title infers he can get distracted.
When in stand up mode Page bemoans getting older and offers examples to support his theory, be it John Lewis shopping, tangines, dinner parties, not like the parties he used to attend, and now being a married man, not much ground breaking ideas here.
Possibly he is at his best when he wanders off into the surreal breaks from this. His self-made wheel of death spinner which involved the audience and his mobile phone costume recounting a conversation between a radio jock and Ariana Grande were the most notable, oh and where did the domestic at the end fit in?
