Annabel Marlow…is this okay?? 4****

| On 15, Aug 2023

Ms Marlow has a great voice, and in her opening gambit entreats us – and perhaps herself – not to wonder why we’re there, but rather to just enjoy the moment. The show has a throughline of reminders to ignore the self-doubt and do the thing anyway, even if it means inventing motivators to prod the process along. There’s no grand theme, but this works as a nice unifying device.

We are fortunate that Ms Marlow has decided to present her musically-based show, rather than the dance number. She is, as noted, an excellent singer, and writes excellent songs. Some are very funny, and the ones that aren’t instead elicit some other emotion – nostalgia, melancholy, serenity. She might not have some great trauma, but when she wants to, Ms Marlow can be extremely relatable.

On top of all of which she has an accomplished stage presence, and very quickly builds a nice rapport with the audience. Song topics include dating during lockdown, overthinking, and doctors who don’t listen. She’s also great at the talking, providing context for the songs where required, and making that funny too. Good comedy, funny songs, and an excellent voice.
