Sh!t-faced Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet 4**** - One4Review
one4review | On 21, Aug 2023
Shortened version of a Shakespeare classic, Romeo and Juliet, with a twist. Part rehearsed, part improv show with plenty laughs. The wild card being – one cast member is encouraged to drink as much alcohol as they can before and during the show.
Of course, watching that one cast member completely fluff and forget their lines is hilarious. The others in the cast equally have to be on their game, ready to respond and improvise when needed.
There was so much fun and energy on the stage which was clear to see and the cast look out for one another – especially when one leaps off the stage unexpectedly!
Every night has the potential to be different with a different cast member selected to drink each night. The audience certainly enjoyed it, with some of the most famous scenes done very differently to how we are taught at school.
This show was really funny and enjoyable. I’m not sure what I expected and my advice would be to go in with an open mind. If you want to see a show that can have levels of unpredictability and potential injury, this is for you. I’d love to know if Shakespeare would approve of some of the rewritings!
