Smashing Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet 5**** - One4Review

Smashing Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet 5****

| On 12, Aug 2022

Shakespeare for kids can be challenging. My daughter and I have seen shows that have been a bit too silly, or a bit too dry. This one woman show is just the perfect balance. Lecoq trained actor Penelope Soloman used humour, theatre, puppets and song to retell the well-loved story of Romeo and Juliet.

My 10 year old loved this. She has read a children’s version or Romeo and Juliet and so knew the story. Puppets were used for the characters, and a little cart was used for the settings. What was wonderful about this version was that Penelope used Shakespeare’s words when performing, and stopped sometimes to explain them to the audience. So whilst the puppets and dressing up were childlike, the telling of the story was engaging and new for older kids. Younger kids may find it difficult to concentrate on the story for the full 55 minutes.

After the show my daughter and I counted up the number of characters that Penelope introduced and there were 10! It was hard to believe because the telling of the story was so smooth and seamless, but also funny and exciting.

I think this show is perfect for kids and eight and over. The highlight of our fringe so far.
