Mary O'Connell: Money Princess 3.5*** - One4Review
one4review | On 23, Aug 2023
Mary O’Connell came out strong, bounding on stage with attitude and verve. She’s got great stage presence and a lovely cadence to her delivery that she keeps up throughout the show. This, and a robust framing narrative keep potentially disparate elements of the show on track to a satisfying and pleasing ending.
The show orbits the twin stars of Ms O’Connell’s life: her anxiety about money, and her resentment of people who irresponsibly have fun. It seems that Ms O’Connell would love to let rip and do some spontaneously expensive things, but she can’t quite bring herself to do it, and feels icky when other people do. From this honest and authentic basis, Ms O’Connell builds a show: how it shapes her attitude towards other things, and how she approaches opportunities that come her way.
While the path through the show was perhaps sometimes a little overgrown and less obvious, this is nevertheless a solid hour from an experienced and skilled comedian.
