Thirst 4**** - One4Review

Thirst 4****

| On 08, Aug 2023

Written and performed by fringe debutant Callum Hughes, Thirst is performed in a vaulted cellar, a beautifully intimate venue, and a perfect space for a one man show about alcohol and sobriety.

Callum is a master storyteller and recounts his childhood growing up in a small Oxfordshire town with 28 pubs to choose from. He is encouraged on stage by his friend ‘Adonis Josh’, who has set up an ‘open mic’ night in his local pub, but cannot actually sing. Having originally been introduced to performing through Christian rock, discovering Jesus Christ and cannabis at a younger age, Callum finds that he is a natural performer. He is encouraged by two, or is it three, Godfathers named John. Following a period of unemployment and being forced to move back in with his parents, convinced that his alcohol intake is normal, Callum is taken aback when an increasing number of his friends start to warn him about his drinking or tell him that he is considered ‘a bit of a boozer’. Inevitably, things get out of hand and, hence, something has to change.

Callum is a charismatic performer, and really drags you into his personal story with a blend of music, storytelling and comedy. Thirst is a very enjoyable hour of Fringe theatre, almost like being in a pub having fun with your pals, and I would highly recommend catching this show.
